Health Benefits Of Sleep

We’re all used to today’s technology and – like it or not – we’re used to charging our smartphones, gadgets, and other appliances. It may be inconvenient and even irritating, yet we know that if we fail to charge, we’ll be in trouble.

Surprisingly, even though we so conscientiously charge our gadgets, we consider sleep deprivation an act of heroism. As a matter of fact, most of us don’t get enough sleep. You know that if you don’t charge your phone, it will fail you. Doesn’t it stand a reason that a body that doesn’t get enough sleep may fail you, too?

Even though science didn’t decipher all the secrets of sleep, the few health benefits of sleep we are certain of are:

  • some processes within our bodies take place only when we sleep
  • sleep reenergizes
  • sleep relaxes the neurological system
  • sleep restores the cardiovascular system
  • sleep regulates hormone production
  • sleep strengthens the immune system
  • cells are repaired and renewed during deep sleep
  • sleep has restorative benefits

There are four stages of sleep that repeat in cycles throughout the night. The most beneficial is the third stage (deep sleep) during which our blood pressure falls, breathing and brain activity slow down and the body and mind relax. This is also the time when our bodies perform maintenance and repairs.

When you don’t get enough sleep, you’re depriving yourself of the opportunity to recharge and repair. You compromise your health, cognitive abilities and yes, mood. Bottom line? Our wellness and functionality depend on getting enough quality sleep.

Trouble sleeping? There are a few things you can do. Start with creating a calming going to sleep routine.

  • Try to go to sleep at the same time every night.
  • Don’t eat a heavy meal after 7 pm.
  • Don’t drink coffee or use blue screens for two hours before going to bed.
  • Get the TV set and smartphone out of your bedroom.
  • Don’t take a too hot or too cold shower before going to sleep.
  • Don’t recycle the day’s problems in bed. Focus on one nice event or person.

Incidentally, I’ve been through a period when for no apparent reason, all of a sudden, I couldn’t sleep.
I don’t have the greatest vision and no lightbulb is bright enough for me. Finally, I discovered a LED lightbulb that met my expectations. It’s called Vivid Natural Light. I loved it!
After a month of not sleeping, I’ve done some research and learned that the fantastic new lightbulb was my problem. As it turns out our sleep-and-wake cycle is controlled by light. My amazing lightbulb mimicked daylight so my body refused to sleep in the belief that it was high noon regardless of the time of night….

If you also have trouble sleeping, the most likely culprit is either a device you’re using or a habit you have (any caffeinated drink in the evening will keep awake!). Do some research and find your solution.

When all else fails, try Melatonin or L-Tryptophan. Both are natural, nutritional supplements that help restore normal sleep patterns. Both are non-addictive.

We all believe that we can’t live without our phones. Chances are, we can. However, none of us can stay well for long without regular maintenance, repairs, or recharging. The better half of your misery is the lack of sleep! Sleep is a natural “cure” for many preventable ills. Place a good going to sleep routine and sleeping schedule high on your priority list.
